As we all know D1000 was put into service in Sand but a friend of mine was under the impression that all other examples were put into service in Maroon with the exception of Champion D1015 which was in Ochre.
However, from some websites I have seen they imply that a crop of them were put out in Green. As is bourne out by the Models tht can be bought.
Does anyone have any photo's from the early days that show the westerns in their Green liveries (I can find some modern paint jobs but not original ones)
Also any truth to the rumour that one was painted Black but quickly repainted Blue!

Yes, a few were painted green, though offhand I can't recall how many. Certainly one was Western Pioneer, that had red-backed name plates to it.

All outshopped in maroon except for the following:
Desert Sand: 1000
Green: 1002, 1003 ,1004, 1035, 1036, 1037, 1038
Golden Ochre: 1015
Green locos had red-backed nameplates, all others had black background.
Hope that helps.

Yes I have come across that info. Interestingly enough of the green westerns
1002,1003,1035,10387 received a maroon repaint prior to becoming BR Blue as did 1000 and 1015
Whereas 1004, 1036, 1037 remained green until they got BR Blue.
My original question is :- Does anyone have or know where I can find an original picture of a green western?

There are original green Westerns on some of our DVDs. _________________ Steve

Western fans that we are aside, does anyone else agree they all wore their various liveries well? Take the Deltics (well most contemporary diesels for that matter) - they looked great in the two-tone green but horrendous in blue. Yet the Westerns seemed to wear all their liveries with grace.

Yes, I think I'd go along with that David.
I'm probably in the minority in choosing green as my favourite livery for a Western.
Amonst my other favorite liveries are 47s in original two-tone green, 40s in BR blue, and I also liked 56s in large logo blue.

I like green as well, would like to see a western in this livery, I know non of the preserved diesels were ever green, but 1010 in 1035 disguise would be one, and 1048 was in green when first preserved...
But true, the westerns looked good in all there liveries, well, except 1000 in sand!

Though I can only base opinion on photos, I think they looked at their most magnificent in green, even against Champion's golden ochre. Yes Champion looked great, but, I don't think I would like to have seen that as a standard livery oddly enough.

Yup, green was my favourite too.
I saw an advert for western models lately and it had models in TWO different greens. Can anyone shed any light on this?
